The illustrations below were sent to John and Margaret Cooper (in response to their ‘An invitation to children and young people’ project invitation) by their friend Michelle O’Brien, who is Veterinary and Wildlife Health Officer at the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) in Slimbridge, Gloucestershire.
Michelle’s daughter Rowan (who has just turned eight years old) recently wrote a poem for school about an ocelot.

She also prepared and illustrated a piece looking at the differences between poisonous and venomous animals.
Rowan’s family are very keen on wildlife and recently were carrying out butterfly counts on communal area in their village that Michelle’s husband helps to manage.
We are grateful to Rowan for letting us show her work on FFON.
I am most impressed by Rowan O’Brien’s illustrated article on animals that can make harmful substances. It’s very informative and helpfully arranged, and the drawings are wonderful. In fact Rowan has made the distinction between Venomous and Poisonous better than my article about Charming Snakes. I wonder, Rowan do you actually like some of these dangerous creatures ? Which one do you like best ? Platypus is my favourite.
But from your lovely poem and picture I’m guessing you like ocelots most.

I’ll pass those questions to Rowan’s parents… Best wishes, Valerie. Simon

Dear Valerie, Thank you so much – Rowan was extremely excited to know that her work had been commented on!
She wanted me to let you know that her favourite poisonous or venomous animal is the komodo dragon as she thinks it has a very clever strategy for hunting! She says Ocelots are still her favourite overall though 🙂
All the best
Michelle Allen (Rowan’s mum)
